HP patents RFID document mangement

August 23, 2004

Via digi.no we found this patent (US2004141790): Hewlett Packard has developed and patented a system where the printer associates meta data to an RFID chip in the paper it prints on (described as a passive (reading an identifier/serial number only) tag). With a couple of RFID readers in the office and on people's desks, you can then not only track who has which printout at any given time, but also get additional data by scanning the tag and accessing the metadata database: who wrote / printed the document; Microsoft Word meta data information etc.
