RFID Devices May Affect Heart Pacemakers, Japanese Government Warns

June 22, 2004

Japanese Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications (Soumu-Sho) revealed the result of their Investigation on How Radio Waves Influence Medical Devices. Here are some of the things the report says:

  • Wireless LAN stations are virtually harmless except for a certain device.
  • RFID devices affected medical devices when they are positioned close to each other. Therefore, it is recommended that persons using medical devices such as heart pacemakers to walk through an RFID device (gate) right in the middle without stopping.
  • When RFID devices exist, it must be (at least) clearly indicated.
